Abstract

  • The perceptions and treatment of schizophrenia have changed radically in recent years. Today, alongside antipsychotic medications, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends the use of cognitive behavioural therapy for people who experience schizophrenia. CBT has been shown to normalise the experience of hearing voices by reducing the stigma associated with schizophrenia and allowing people to reevaluate their beliefs. However, only about 10% of service users receive CBT. Mental health nurses could help to bridge the gap.
