Abstract

  • Since its conception in the 1960s, community psychiatry has aimed at caring for people suffering from mental disorders without secluding them from their life environment. Its main aim is not the mere treatment of symptoms but is focused on allowing users the best recovery path. It seeks to help users to improve each domain of their life, being satisfyingly included in the community. For this purpose, community psychiatry greatly relies on a wide range of different professionals and mental health services, co-operating to develop highly individualized treatments to be shared, whenever is possible, with users. This chapter will provide a brief overview of the main principles and instruments of community psychiatry.
